Company founder Janet Sigler created her products as a labor of love. Her mother had Type 2 diabetes for 30 years. Over time, she became sensitive to maltitol and sorbitol (sugar alcohols), often used as sugar substitutes in "no sugar added" and "sugar-free" foods.
Since her mother loved muffins, Janet decided to experiment with her own muffin recipes. "It started as a hobby and a challenge," Janet says. "It turned into a passion to create healthy treats my mother and others would enjoy."
When Janet began looking for sugar alternatives, she considered all available in the marketplace. However, learning that most sugar alcohols are chemically based or chemically processed, she chose to use erythritol because it was the exception.
Erythritol is an all-natural, very low-calorie alternative to sugar that is found naturally in foods such as pears, watermelon and grapes. Erythritol does not cause gastric distress since it's quickly absorbed in the small intestine. Additionally, clinical studies show erythritol does not affect blood sugar or insulin levels.
Obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. and leads to a greater risk of developing many diseases, including Type 2 diabetes**.
In fact, more than 23 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes.† An additional 57 million Americans are classified as "at risk" for developing diabetes.†
The good news is that eating healthy and treating diabetes doesn't mean completely avoiding sweets. With their low sugar and low calorie content, everyone can feel good about including Guiltless Sweets products as part of their diet.
Treat yourself. Snack right.
